The team at Newstag, a Swedish startup based in Stockholm, aims to change the way we consume news content. The mainsteam media often ignores particularly needy news cases. However, Newstag strives to shed light on the variety of issues whilst joining forces with charities in order to allocate funds and gain exposure. Newstag has recently formed a partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) – the platform will increase awareness particularly on human rights issues worldwide. The Newstag site allows its users to customise the news they’d like to read and focus on stories from specific countries or regions. We’re glad to see startups that are formed for social good and encourage philanthropy amongst young entrepreneurs.

Breaking through the startup norm in 2011, GiveDirectly provides a one-of-a-kind World Aid service – offering money directly to African families in extreme poverty. The team at GiveDirectly utilizes publicly available data coupled with sophisticated technology to pinpoint families in remote villages living well below the poverty line. GiveDirectly has donated $15M since their launch; they strive to disrupt the philanthropic world and ensure that the donations are given directly to the recipients. The startup’s timing in penetrating the African market was crucial – the continent’s revolution in mobile banking, particularly in Kenya and Uganda, has boomed in recent years. Surprisingly enough, the average sub-Saharan African is 60 times more likely to have a mobile financial account than a European.

Imagine a stylish, emission-free black cab or Uber alternative? The team at Gliide, a London-based startup, has designed an eco-friendly business for green conscious Londoners. As sustainability and air pollution become an increasingly pressing issue in the UK and around the world, Gliide aims to roll out an emission-free fleet of Tesla Model S all-electric taxis in London. The startup also promises its customers fixed taxi rates and no hidden extras. An article by TechCrunch has deemed the startup to be a “cleaner Uber alternative”. Gliide is potentially a step closer to solving London’s pollution issues and a revolutionary move towards a growth in the sustainable and clean tech sectors. Entrepreneurs and startups are always more likely to be popular if they promote a business with eco-friendly, sustainable, and socially beneficial intentions. We’re looking forward to seeing more Gliide cars on the road in London especially due to the city’s increasing issues with pollution.

The continent of Africa has recently awoken from a dormant period of untouched business. The scene for African Startups has improved as it entered the mobile tech landscape as an emerging market and a potential goldmine for tech investors. The countries of Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa are slowly creeping into the modern tech landscape. The continent is home to PesaPal, a Kenyan company often given the moniker “Africa’s PayPal”. Similar to PayPal, PesaPal’s consumers are able to shop, pay bills, and buy mobile phone credit. Historically, Africa has been plagued by disease, war, and corruption. These negative aspects have allowed social good enterprises to enter the Africa market. With the help of skilled strategic bloggers and engineering experts, Nairobi-based startup Ushahdi developed crowdsource data to gather further information about post-election violence in Kenya in 2008. Today, the startup has evolved into a non-profit technology company, used by individuals and companies alike to fight for social good in 100+ countries around the globe.

What is Lorem Ipsum?
Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Why do we use it?
It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).

Where does it come from?
Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in a piece of classical Latin literature from 45 BC, making it over 2000 years old. Richard McClintock, a Latin professor at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked up one of the more obscure Latin words, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage, and going through the cites of the word in classical literature, discovered the undoubtable source. Lorem Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. This book is a treatise on the theory of ethics, very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of Lorem Ipsum, “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet..”, comes from a line in section 1.10.32.

The standard chunk of Lorem Ipsum used since the 1500s is reproduced below for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 from “de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum” by Cicero are also reproduced in their exact original form, accompanied by English versions from the 1914 translation by H. Rackham.

Where can I get some?
There are many variations of passages of Lorem Ipsum available, but the majority have suffered alteration in some form, by injected humour, or randomised words which don’t look even slightly believable. If you are going to use a passage of Lorem Ipsum, you need to be sure there isn’t anything embarrassing hidden in the middle of text. All the Lorem Ipsum generators on the Internet tend to repeat predefined chunks as necessary, making this the first true generator on the Internet. It uses a dictionary of over 200 Latin words, combined with a handful of model sentence structures, to generate Lorem Ipsum which looks reasonable. The generated Lorem Ipsu
